Stockmann aims to significantly reduce its climate emissions

The Stockmann Group has drawn up a science-based climate plan and target for the entire Group and value chain. The Group aims to reduce climate emissions from its own operations and its value chain by 42 per cent by 2030 compared to 2022.

Stockmann Group signed the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) in autumn 2021. SBTi defines a clear pathway to reduce climate emissions in line with the Paris Agreement. At the end of October, Stockmann submitted the climate plan and target prepared under the commitment to SBTi experts for review. The company expects SBTi to validate its climate target during 2024.

“Sustainability is at the heart of the Stockmann Group and we bear our responsibility to future generations. Setting a science-based climate target guides our actions to reduce emissions even more ambitiously and lay the foundation for the Group's sustainable growth. We have already started to implement our climate plan in Lindex and the Stockmann department store business", says Susanne Ehnbåge, CEO of the Stockmann Group.

The biggest climate impact from products sold

The Stockmann Group’s target to reduce absolute climate emissions by 42 per cent by 2030 covers emissions from the entire value chain, i.e. scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions under the GHG Protocol. The baseline is 2022, when emissions were around 296 ktCO2e.

More than two thirds of the Stockmann Group’s climate emissions come from the goods and services it sells. Other significant emission sources are transport, energy used in the company’s own operations and emissions during the use of products sold by the company, for example from washing clothes.

Working together to find solutions

Reducing climate emissions requires cooperation across the value chain, as the company's own operations only account for around four per cent of emissions. Key measures to reduce emissions include improving energy efficiency and switching to renewable energy throughout the value chain as well as using lower-emission transport solutions. In addition, increasing the use of more climate-friendly materials and transitioning to more circular business models and services will reduce emissions.

“We encourage all partners across our value chain to set science-based targets. Together we can make a difference for the planet”, says Susanne Ehnbåge.
