Stockmann introduces a new type of design collaboration – unique works of light art will take over the Helsinki city center department store

Stockmann plc, Press Release 19 August 2024

A unique lighting exhibition of works by Finnish artists and designers will light up the Stockmann city centre department store this autumn as part of the Helsinki Design Week programme in September. The exhibition In a new light is Stockmann’s way of showcasing Finnish design and bringing inspiration and new experiences to its customers.

Design Week in September will spread to Stockmann, when the Helsinki city centre department store's exhibition In a New Light brings together lighting works by six exciting Finnish artists and designers. The artists and designers represent different styles, fields of art and generations. The exhibition brings together designer and professor Eero Aarnio, sculptor Björn Weckström, designer Linda Bergroth, designer Hanna Anonen, design student Juha Joutsi and visual artist Maisa Majakka.

The design project In a new light is curated for Stockmann by designer Harri Koskinen and design and art multidisciplinary Anna Moilanen. The lighting works on display at Stockmann 6–30 September 2024 are a collaboration with the Finnish lighting manufacturer Innolux.

“It’s inspiring to connect skilled makers and imaginative ideas in a concrete way. Light is an essential element for us, and the lighting works are fascinating in many ways. We have not set many limits to the realisation of the works, and it is fascinating to see new ideas emerging from different perspectives. From an artist's and designer's point of view, the progression of a concept into a quality and functional product is always a multi-step process. It has been great to see the strong commitment of the participants to the project," says designer Harri Koskinen.

The exhibition brings light into the darkening autumn

The exhibition will open to the public at the start of Helsinki Design Week on 6 September 2024 and will be installed in the Argos Hall on the fifth floor of the Stockmann Helsinki city centre department store. The works will also be on display in the window facing Pohjoisesplanadi.

“This is a new and interesting design collaboration for us, although highlighting and supporting Finnish design has been important to Stockmann throughout our history. With this exhibition, we are returning to our roots a little, as Stockmann used to have its own lighting production. It’s great to have the opportunity to showcase the collection to all Finnish design lovers and at the same time bring a little light into the darkening autumn evenings," says Tia Rantanen, Chief Brand, Customer and Sustainability Officer at Stockmann.

The lighting exhibition In a new light will be on display at the Stockmann Helsinki city center department store 6–30 September 2024. Helsinki Design Week will take place 6–15 September 2024.
