Stockmann has signed the Science Based Targets initiative to mitigate climate change

The Stockmann Group has signed the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) to set targets for reducing its carbon dioxide emissions in line with the Paris Agreement. Through the SBTi commitment, Stockmann will enhance its climate action and further develop a low-carbon roadmap to cut emissions and reduce climate risks. Stockmann will determine its science-based climate targets within two years in accordance with the schedule of the initiative.

“Stopping global warming requires effective climate action and a change in companies’ way of thinking. Stockmann wants to actively contribute to this development in cooperation with our stakeholders. Sustainability plays a key role in Stockmann’s strategy and business operations. Setting science-based climate targets is an important step in further increasing the sustainability of our operations,” says Jari Latvanen, CEO of Stockmann.

Stockmann participated in the UN Global Compact Climate Ambition Accelerator programme in the autumn of 2021. Its participation has strengthened and supported the Group’s climate work and increased understanding of the conditions under which Stockmann can further develop its operations in line with the 1.5-degree roadmap.

“This goal-setting process supports Stockmann’s daily work towards more sustainable business operations. We are all responsible for the future, and this concerns all sectors. We are working to find out how we can reinvent our business model and processes. We are also aiming to increase awareness of this important issue,” says Maija Niukkanen, Corporate Social Responsibility Manager at Stockmann.

Stockmann has monitored its carbon dioxide emissions since 2011 and reported them within the CDP climate programme.
