Stockmann continues its support for the Bangladesh Accord

Stockmann continues its commitment to improving fire and building safety in Bangladesh. By signing the ‘transition Accord’, Stockmann continues its support for sustainable and safe ready-made-garment industry in Bangladesh, when the original Accord on Fire and Building Safety in Bangladesh comes to an end in May 2018. The purpose of the Transition Accord is to complete the identified remediation needs and ensure a handover to a national regulatory body, at latest by the end of May 2021.

The total number of factories covered by Accord inspections in Bangladesh is more than 1,600. By the beginning of December 2017, the overall remediation progress for all factories within the Accord was 81%. In the 36 factories producing for Lindex and Stockmann own brands, 89% of the issues had been corrected.

Bangladesh is an important production country for the Group, especially for Lindex garments. In 2016, 37 per cent of the Group’s own brand garments were made in Bangladesh. The local personnel in our own production office in Dhaka, Bangladesh, are in daily contact with the production units and play a key role in developing working conditions and identifying risks.

The Stockmann Group joined the Accord on Fire and Building Safety in Bangladesh in May 2013, being the first Finnish company to do so. The agreement aims at developing safe working conditions for textile workers by, for example, independent safety inspections and renovating factory buildings. The accord has been initiated by IndustriALL Global Union and UNI Global Union.
