Major savings in electricity consumption through lighting renewal at Stockmann's Tampere department store

Stockmann Oyj Abp 5.9.2023

Stockmann’s Tampere department store has renewed its ambient lighting and replaced old halogen lamps with 3D-printed LED spotlights made from recycled material. The renewed lighting will reduce energy consumption by 668,000 kWh per year, equivalent to the average annual consumption of 36 electrically heated detached houses.

Stockmann Tampere is the first department store in Finland to use 3D-printed LED lights for store lighting. The environmentally friendly spotlights are made from 100% recycled material and have a 75% lower carbon footprint than traditional metal lights, according to lighting supplier Signify. The lights are made from recycled materials such as old fishing nets and CDs. Moreover, 3D-printed lights are always made to order, so there is no need to stock them.

“Renewing the ambient lighting and replacing the old spotlights with LED lamps will save a total of 668,000 kWh of electricity consumption per year, which corresponds to the annual consumption of 36 electrically heated detached houses on average," says Päivi Itkonen-Melartin, Director at Stockmann Tampere.

The specific characteristics of the fashion trade have been taken into account in the colour rendering and light recipes of Stockmann's spotlights. This ensures that the colours of products are better reproduced and that the customer can immediately see the correct colour shades of the garment in the store.

Stockmann promoting the circular economy

In addition to improving energy efficiency, Stockmann’s environmental work includes circular economy thinking, which guides Stockmann’s own product and service design as well as the choice of partners.

“In addition to installing new lights, we have invested in promoting the circular economy, for example by introducing collection points of discarded textiles in all our department stores. Extending the life cycle of products is an important part of the service offering in department stores. To create their own sustainable style, our customers can benefit from personalised fashion services. We also offer a repair and sewing service for new clothes and clothes bought elsewhere and for used clothes," says Päivi Itkonen-Melartin.
