Concerning the accident at Multifabs factory in Bangladesh
A factory owned by Multifabs Ltd, a supplier of the Stockmann Group, suffered a terrible accident in the evening of Monday 3 July, when a boiler exploded during maintenance work. The factory was closed for production at the time of the explosion due to holiday. According to current information, ten people were killed during the accident and many are injured.
We take this accident very seriously. Now our main concern is with those suffering from the accident. Our deepest sympathies and condolences go to the affected families. We have been cooperating with Multifabs Ltd for many years. Multifabs produces garments to Stockmann own brands and Lindex, and it is one of the key supplier of Lindex. We will work together and support the factory and its employees in any way we can.
So far it looks like a terrible accident that has occurred. Authorities in Bangladesh are currently investigating reasons for the accident, and we are monitoring the situation closely. Local Lindex employees are at the factory together with the representatives of the Bangladesh Accord to assist and find out what has happened.
As part of our corporate responsibility, the Stockmann Group signed the Bangladesh Accord on Fire and Building Safety in 2013. Since then there have been significant improvements in safety in several factories. Multifabs’ factory was audited by BSCI in May 2016 with grade Good (B), and no significant deviations from the BSCI guidelines were found in the audit.
